Documents field work and mapping projects in the American Middle West and West, standardization of geological nomenclature and symbols, surveys for vanadium undertaken by the Survey's Strategic Minerals Program, the Mohole project's study of the earth's crust and mantle layers, a study of earthquakes in the Denver area, establishment of the Lunar Science Institute, work of the Geological Society of America's Committee on the War Effort during World War II, and Rubey's writings, including "The geologic history of sea water: an attempt to state the problem" (1951), "The development of the hydrosphere and atmosphere with special reference to probable composition of the early atmosphere" (1955), and "Role of fluid pressure in mechanics of overthrust faulting", coauthored with Marion King Hubbert (1959). Correspondents include Hubbert as well as Chester R. Longwell and Steven S. Oriel.

Rubey worked as a scientific liaison to the U.S. Army for the U.S. Geological Survey during World War II. Later he would serve as president of the Geological Society of America, chairman of the National Research Council for the National Academy of Sciences, and board member on the National Science Board for the National Science Foundation. Born in Missouri in 1887, Chester R. Longwell became a Yale educated geologist who did significant fieldwork and research in the desert wilds of Clark County.
